Our Heritage in Mauritius

A Living Culture, Carried Across the Sea

Telugu culture is one of the oldest and richest living traditions in the world — a tapestry of language, devotion, music, art, and family bonds. For generations, families of Telugu heritage have made Mauritius their home, and with them they brought songs, festivals, prayers, and a way of life that endures.

This page is a gentle doorway — created for young Telugu Mauritians to discover, understand, and fall in love with their roots. Explore the language, the festivals, the prayers, and the arts that connect us across generations and across the island. మనమంతా ఒక్కటే — Together We Are All One.

Telugu Bhasha — The Language of Our Roots

తెలుగు భాష

Telugu is a classical Dravidian language, often called the 'Italian of the East' for its melodic, vowel-ending words. Preserving it keeps our oral traditions, songs, and stories alive for the next generation.

A small brass oil lamp is lit before the home shrine, accompanied by a brief prayer. The flame symbolises the dispelling of darkness and ignorance. (Educational description of a common Telugu devotional custom — not a MANAM programme.)
Bhajans are devotional songs sung in call-and-response, often accompanied by the harmonium and clapping. They form the heart of many Telugu spiritual gatherings. (Educational overview — confirm MANAM's own bhajan schedule before publishing.)
A pooja may be a simple daily offering or an elaborate community observance on festival days. Flowers, kumkum, and prasad are shared among those gathered. (General cultural information; MANAM's specific prayer events are to be confirmed.)

These are educational descriptions of common Telugu devotional customs. They do not describe specific MANAM prayer programmes, dates, or venues.

Ugadi marks the Telugu new year, celebrated with the reading of the Panchanga (the new year's almanac) and the tasting of Ugadi Pacchadi — a mixture of six flavours symbolising life's mixed experiences: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. It is a day of new beginnings, drawn with colourful rangoli at the doorstep.
